Magnesium is a mineral that can be found in the human body in a large amount. Magnesium is safe for most adults when taken by mouth or via injecting if used correctly. Sometimes magnesium leads to nausea, stomach upset, diarrhea, vomiting, and other side effects. The safe dose for adults is up to 350 mg per day. But magnesium can be unsafe if taken in very large amounts. Large doses of magnesium can build up in the human body, leading to more severe side effects - low blood pressure, an irregular heartbeat, confusion, coma, slowed breathing, and even death. Magnesium is probably safe for pregnant and breast-feeding women when correctly taken in the allowed amounts following the consultation with a medical specialist. These amounts are linked to the age of a woman. High doses of magnesium can be extremely harmful to people with heart block, as well as with kidney problems, for instance, kidney failure. People with kidneys that don't function well may face trouble clearing magnesium from their body.
